The Door

As I recently sat in Hebrew class listening to the teacher explain the characters in the Hebrew alphabet that spell the word “Adam”, the Holy Spirit began to speak to me of the perfection, simplicity, and complexity of God’s great wisdom all packaged up in this one little word. “Adam”.

You see in the original Hebrew the word “Adam” is spelled with 3 pictographs each having their own origin and meaning that contribute to the story of the whole. You see, the first means “something of great strength” it is also sometimes associated with God or that which is first. The second character represents a door. The third represents that which spreads out, like water does. So that though the sound translates to Adam, the first man, the story of the Pictographs in the name speak of Adam (and thus all mankind) having been created to be the door by which the strength of God’s Spirit would spread across the earth like a river!

It is also no coincidence I think that there are three letters with three meanings that describe the purpose of man’s being considering that we are three part beings, created in the likeness of a three part God. That is to say that God is comprised of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost and in that likeness are we comprised (according to scripture) of a spirit, a soul, and a body. Therefore just like the three letters of the name Adam in Hebrew is our soul (the mind will and emotions) the door by which God’s spirit (character/voice) is able to influence the body so that it can effect and spread out into the physical world.

But there was a problem. There was an other spirit knocking at that door as well and when Adam opened the door to that other spirit, he let sin into the world. Therefore in the same manner that he was suppose to be the door that let God’s spirit (character/fruit) spread through the earth, he instead let the devil and his character begin to be spread into the earth. We now call this “the sin nature”.

“And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door…” – Genesis 4:6-7

Yet where the first Adam failed the second Adam came to redeem and set God’s original plan back in motion. This was spoken of prophetically by Ezekiel when he saw the temple (Jesus’s body), and a river (God’s Spirit), flowing out of it’s door (the blood) into all the world.

“Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” – John 10:7-9

This is why on the day of Pentecost the fire was seen resting upon their heads. So that they would know that they had become the new temple, as the fire only fell upon the temple, and that river of God’s Spirit would now be able to flow out of them into all the world! So now we are back to where Adam was! We are all doors.

“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.” – Psalms 24:7-8

Yet Jesus made one thing very clear about this door. As my dad always told us as kids, the door knob is on the inside, you have to choose to open it to Him. He will not force His way in. He will speak, but we have to open our hearts to Him and what He says. We have to ask Him to come in and teach us, and change us, and lead us. Because though He stands at the door and knocks, so does the enemy of our soul, even as he did for Adam. We have to choose to close the door to him and open it to the Holy Spirit of Jesus. Flesh cannot overcome spirit, Spirit overcomes flesh. We cannot defeat the sin nature by any work of our flesh, we simply were not designed to work that way. We must choose to open the door of our heart to a stronger Spirit (the Lord strong and mighty, the Holy Spirit), so that He will come in and overcome every other spirit, our soul, and our flesh that we might walk in the demonstration of His righteousness, going into all the world as a witness of the overcoming power of the blood of Jesus. Because in the end it comes down to this, He came and became our door, that we might go out and be His.

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” – Revelation 3:20-22

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” – Mark 16:15-18

Wait for Your Reward

“Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered. Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” – Malachi 3:14-18

God is so merciful and patient, because that it is not His will that any should parish but that all might come to salvation. He delights in mercy and give space for repentance so that it may seem at times that He is turning a blind eye to sin, pride, selfishness, and rebellion. Yet I assure you that no hidden thing escapes Him. He see all and knows the heart of both the wicked and the righteous.

The root of all open sin, selfishness, vain glory, and rebellion is pride. The pride that tells the sinner that God does not see, does not care, and will not eventually be forced to judge them for their sin. The pride that convinces them that their own logic, will, plan, and ideas of what ought to be right is more beneficial to them then to trust in God’s wisdom and revelation. It’s pride that drives the selfishness that says, I’ll do what’s easy and pleases my flesh and not expect to eventually pay a price for it. Yet the humble fear God and His great wisdom enough to walk in His righteousness even when it doesn’t make since, and eventually they will reap the rewards of it.

This is the theme of today’s passage. The prideful and selfish are not willing to pay the price to walk in righteousness, they would rather walk in the rewards of wickedness for a season and pay the price of Judgment in the end. All the while, those who fear the Lord must encourage each other, because though they pay a price to walk in humble obedience in the temporary, they receive their rewards in eternity.

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” – Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

However, not only in eternity. Though we be tried and purified in the furnace of affliction to the point that the world might even question rather or not God is truly with us for a season, still will He reveal a great weight of Glory unto His Name and our validation in the revealing, once that He has done His great work of perfecting. He does a perfect and complete work so trust in His timing and in His wisdom. Don’t be tempted to reveal yourself before He is finished. Don’t exult yourself. Don’t be tempted to indulge in the error of the wicked. Fear God and keep His commandments. It will be worth it. Keep believing. He will reveal and reward His faithful ones in their proper season.

He’s looking for fruitfulness. Not flaunting, flattering, faker self elevating, seekers of attention.. He wants fruitfulness and fruits are only produced in their proper season. Trust Him and wait patiently for it. He knows what He is doing.

“Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked; For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out. My son, fear thou the Lord and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change: For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?” – Proverbs 24:19-22

“Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” – Malachi 3:16-18
