The Fear of the LORD

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”  Proverbs 1:7

If the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, then how do we acquire the good and healthy fear of the Lord so that we can come to the beginning of knowledge?  If you do not fear the Lord then you truly have no knowledge.  The word knowledge used in this verse is from the Hebrew word da`ath, which means discernment, understanding, and wisdom.  So to gain knowledge one must fear the Lord.  This word fear is not the same fear that one gets from watch a horror movie or the like,  it is more related to respect, reverence, and piety.

For one to fear the Lord one must come the realization that God the Father is the Creator of all the seen and unseen.  He created you and me.  So He surely deserves our respect and reverence.  We must also recognize that He a just God, that must punish sin.

Also we must see that all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)  So in our sin God must punish us for being in rebellion to Him and His word.  The punishment is eternal separation from God, and everlasting torment in hell.

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”  Matthew 10:28

“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Hebrews 10:31

Thanks be to God for sending His Son Jesus Christ to pave the way for us to be reconciled, redeemed, restored, and made wholly complete through His perfect work at the cross.  By believe  on Him and believe he was raise from the dead and sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven, we can pass on when we die to paradise with Him.

We must see the fear of the Lord is more about understanding our place and respect God as He truly deserves and  to be obedient to Him and His word. That truly brings knowledge and discernment to live by the grace that is given to us upon salvation.

So if you find yourself in the hands of the living God, tremble.  You do right to tremble.  Call out for Jesus to forgive you of all your unfruitful works of darkness, and repent of all your sins.  Then receive the free gift of salvation.  Let that fear be a reminder to stay on the straight and narrow, and continue in the good fight of faith.

God Bless you and keep you
