“From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” – John 6:66-69
This passage is very disheartening, but also very revealing. Jesus although he had much fame throughout the Gospels, early on in the record of his ministry according to the Gospel of John, he lost many disciples; not referring to the twelve, but many others that stayed with Jesus. When God speaks totally unhindered our lives, when we look at all of the Bible (not just the “sweet parts”), the truth is, it’s not “popular.”
The gospel, although a beautiful story of God rescuing mankind from sure destruction, will require sacrificial living and a stewardship of our salvation. (Luke 12:42-46) That’s where most people fall out of the faith as seen here in the beginning of this passage. Most people don’t like to sacrifice; they’d rather a salvation that doesn’t require carrying a cross. (Matthew 16:24).
Jesus made it abundantly clear that we should “count the cost” (Luke 14:25-32) and that’s what happened to the multitude when they realized that they will have to lose their life to find it. (Matthew 16:25-27).
The parts that grabs my attention more specifically, is when the disciples responded to Jesus’ question asking them if they will also go away: “Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.”
You see although the Bible tells us that the just shall live by faith, (Hebrews 10:38), and of course we are also saved by grace through faith, (Ephesians 2:8-9) it is so important that our faith goes beyond just believing, but KNOWING!!! Peter and all of the rest were bold enough to tell Jesus that they not only believe His words, but KNEW them to be true! There has been many occasions in my walk with God having many conversations with unbelievers regarding my faith that I tell them very honestly, I KNOW my God to be true; not just believing in him, but absolutely knowing assuredly, beyond the shadow of any doubt!
Today, are you “sure” of Jesus?
Are you absolutely convinced?
Have you come to the point where there is nothing that can make you doubt? If not, don’t worry; there is hope! Simply continue forward in your “cross carrying” walk with Jesus dying daily to yourself, and the Lord‘s grace will abundantly fill you on a daily basis until those roots have gone deep in the ground and your tree (spiritually speaking) will be unshakable, unmovable, and planted by streams of living water!
