God’s Reaction To Inaction

goatnations“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” – James‬ ‭4:17‬ ‭

No matter how many times I see it, this verse always pricks my heart to the core. What a revelation that it is not just doing evil that God sees as evil, but when good men do nothing, to God it is evil enough. If we know to do good and don’t do it then it is sin.

Let’s face it, there is no good in and of ourselves. Scripture tells us that every good and perfect thing comes from God. Therefore, anytime we know what is the good and right thing to do we can be assured that it is God placing that in your heart and mind. At this point there is often a struggle between the Spirit which knows what is the good, humble, and selfless thing to do, and the flesh which cares only for what is selfish. Listening to the selfish leadings of the flesh often result in sinful actions, but can also sometimes result simply in inaction. So you see, even doing nothing when you know to do good is sin because it is rooted in rebellion and disobedience. For we are all called unto good works to show forth the glory, power, and love of God.

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.” – Titus‬ ‭2:13-15‬ ‭

I think that many will stand before the judgment seat of Christ at the day of judgment and say, “O Lord, what did I do that was wrong?” Only to be surprised when He replies, “it’s not what you did that was wrong, it’s what you didn’t do.

“And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left…. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” – Matthew‬ ‭25:30-33, 41-46‬ ‭
