“In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.” – John 4:31-32
It’s an interesting thing that while Jesus walked the earth and taught His disciples, they never fasted. Yet Jesus Himself fasted often. However, once He was received unto the Father, His disciples almost immediately began a lifestyle of fasting. Why is this? When Jesus was asked why His disciples didn’t fast, yet John the Baptist’s and others did, He explained that they had no need to, fast for He was with them. You see, one of the great powers and mysteries of fasting is its ability to cause you to hear from heaven. When we show our humility and sincerity to fast and pray, we get a clear connection to the heart of God to receive His words, instructions, warnings, corrections, and directions. This is why the disciples did not need to fast, they heard from Jesus daily in plain speech, yet Jesus Himself still fasted and communed with God often. For He said that He did nothing unless the Father told Him to, and to do the will of the Father, one has to commune with Him and hear clearly from Him what that will is.
“Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” – John 4:33-34
I think the reason so many are so ineffective in the harvesting of souls for the Kingdom of God today, is a lack of prayer and fasting. The fields are white, the harvest is hear, it’s the laborers that are not hearing the instructions on how to bring in the harvest. Sowing brings little earthly reward, but a hope of one to come. Growing brings little earthly reward, but a knowing of one to come. Yet the harvest brings great rewards, both earthly and eternal. So seek the Lord while He may be found with prayer and fasting, for the harvest is ripe, and He will cause you to reap not only of your own labors, but once you have proven to seek and obey His instructions and shown yourself to be a good and obedient harvester, He will even send you to reap in fields you have not sown, to reap a harvest for which you have not labored. This is the essence of Evangelistic Revival.
“Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.” – John 4:35-38
