Free Indeed: The Final Sacrifice

facebook-profile“For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” – Hebrews 9:24-28

Scripture tells us that it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. It points out that this was evident in the fact that these sacrifices had to be done continually and repeatedly to atone for sins but atonement does not equate to removing. You see the sin nature was still there, so these acts only showed ones remorse for their sins, it covered the shame of their sins as the very first animal sacrifice did when God killed the animal to cover the shame of Adam and Eve’s nakedness. However, it never removed the sin nor the desire for it. Therefore, as men continued to sin, breaking God’s commandments even as He set them before their very eyes, they had to continually atone for it through the sacrifice of animals to cover the shame of their sin.

Then enters Jesus, the perfect sacrifice, the true Lamb of God sent to “take away the sins of the world“. Not to atone for them, not to allow us to continue to simply apologize for sin, or to cover up the shamefulness of our continued sin, but to take away sin, to overcome it once and for all taking God’s law off of the stone tablet and writing it on our hearts!

“Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” – Ezekiel 36:25-27

What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. There is nothing else by which man can be freed from the bondage of sin. John 8:34 tells us that what a man serves he is a slave to. Therefor to be in bondage to sin means to be the slave of it, but Jesus came to set the captive free and whom the son sets free is free indeed. This is evident by His one and final sacrifice, the only sacrifice and action that ever was, ever is, and ever will be capable of taking away sin (both the shame of past sins and the desire for future sins) by the writing of His law on your heart and in you mind. Glory be to God, He has overcome!

“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” Romans 6:16-18

“And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;” – Hebrews 10:11-16
