Being Thy Brother’s Keeper And Baring The Burden Of The People“Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?” – 1 Thessalonians 3:10

God calls us to invest in the faith of others. We all have a part to play in reaching the lost and edifying the brethren. Too often now a days, this is being left solely to the pastor and while he or she may be doing their best to fill this need, it is an over baring and over burdening task they were never meant to carry alone.

“I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness. And the Lord said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee. And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.” – Numbers 11:14-17

All those that know the Lord are meant to share in the sufferings of Christ and help carry the burden of the lost. It’s not your pastors job, it’s yours. Jesus said He is the vine and we are the branches. We draw our strength, nourishment, and life from Him. However He also said that every branch that does not bare fruit is cut of and thrown into the fire, which is an allegory for being separated from God and cast into hell.

“Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” – Matthew 7:19-21

Jesus said that “Narrow is the gate that leads to life and few are they that find it.” I think when our time comes to stand before the Lord in judgment we will be surprised at just how narrow it was and just how few they’re were that truly found it. Many claim to believe and call upon the name of the Lord, but a wise man once said, “if you truly believe that Hell is real, then what are you doing for heaven’s sake?

We are all called to share the good news of Christ, we are all commanded to intercede in prayer night and day for others that we might be shown what their walk of faith is lacking and help strengthen them, we are all called to seek God for His will and walk daily in it, we are all commanded to bare fruit for the kingdom of God.

Did you know that the word “Pastor” was actually once an agricultural job title? It is derived from the word “pasturer“. When tending sheep in biblical times, the good shepherd was the master of the flock. He directed where the flock went. If the Shepherd had a large flock, he would then hire pastors to help feed the sheep and protect them from wolves. The pastors did the shepherds work as directed by the shepherd. Likewise, today Jesus is our good Shepherd and He still appoints pastors to guard over His flock, feeding them spiritually, and leading them into all righteousness. The shepherd directs and protects the flock and supplies their food and all their needs, the pastors feed the sheep the food that good shepherd gives them and carries out the shepherds will for the flock, and the sheep’s job is to bare one an other and to produce more sheep. The pastor can feed the sheep, the pastor can direct the sheep, but only sheep can reproduce sheep.

So don’t leave building the flock up to your pastor. That’s your job. We are all our brothers keepers and we are all called to bare the burden of the people togehter, for it is too heavy a burden for one man or woman to carry. So seek God in prayer for His will and instruction,He will show you how to help others. After all, it is His Will that all be saved and come to the saving knowledge of grace. But above all else, intercede diligently day and night for your brethren, that God may show you what they are lacking in the faith and you be able to help perfect them humbly in the Lord and in the love of the Lord, less they fall away from the flock and become easy pray for ravening wolves.

“And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor:…” – Isaiah 59:16

“Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?” – 1 Thessalonians 3:10
