“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;” – Ephesians 5:2-3
First John chapter 4 explains to us that our God is not just a God of love but rather, that God is love itself. It states that if we do not radiate this love then God is not in us because God and love are one in the same. Therefor if God is in us then love is in us and we can not hate, envy, covet, use, or desire to cause strife for others. For that is not the working or character of God or the God Love.
However there is an other kind of love, a selfish love, a lust or desire. The lust of the flesh and the pride of life are a love of self, self pleasure, self will, self promotion, self esteem, and selfish desires. This is why James chapter 8 tells us that to love the world makes us an enemy of God. But it goes a bit deeper then that and to understand how deep we must first truly understand love.
You see in English we have one word for love, but in the Greek there were four words distinguishing between four different types of love. When scripture speaks of God’s love, or a Godly love, it uses the word “agape“. The definition of this word is “an unconditional, selfless, self sacrificing love“. However, scripture also speaks of an other love, sometimes when scripture says “love“, and you look up the original word in the Greek we see that it was “Eros“. Eros is “a sexual love, it’s lust, desire”, it’s what the modern word “erotic” is derived from. It is also the name of the Greek god (counterfeit god) of love, sex, lust, and desire, whose symbol was an arrow. It is a selfish, self pleasing, self willed counterfeit to true love, God’s love, and God Himself.
Which takes us back to our opening verse. We are to love God and love others as Christ loved us, with Agape love, not walking in Eros love through fornication, uncleanness, or covetousness, not even once after we have become followers of Christ. God’s love says that a husband should love his wife as Christ loved the church, being willing to even lay down his life for her. It’s selfless and unconditional. The devils counterfeit of love says if you don’t fornicate with me, you don’t love me and I’m moving on. It’s selfish and self pleasing. Agape cares only for the other person, Eros cares only for itself. Agape seeks God’s will, Eros seeks it’s own. Agape is true love, Eros is lust, the counterfeit love. God is the God of Agape, therefor God is Agape. Lucifer is the god of Eros, therefor Lucifer is Eros, the counterfeit god.
So yes, we are to love but we are to love with the love of God, Agape love. Speaking truth in love, even if we have to do so sacrificially, as Christ did. Anything else is preaching an other jesus, and if it is done in the name of love then it is an other love, Eros love. So when people say that they and others are allowed to continue fulfilling the lust of the flesh because God is love and would not judge them, what they are really saying is, god is Eros. Which in the way they mean it, is blasphemy. Yet in reality it is true, their god is Eros which is Lucifer, not Jesus who is Agape.
“But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.” – 2 Corinthians 4:2-5
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” – 1 John 2:15-16
“We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.” – 1 John 4:6-13
God’s spirit is truth, truth is Holy, God’s Spirit is a Holy Spirit because it is Truth. God’s Spirit is also love, therefor truth is love, a selfless agape love. However, allowing one to continue in error with no compassionate warning of that error at the cost of their eternal soul for fear of personal rejection, ridicule, or loss is selfish, it is Aeros, a self love, a selfish love, not God’s love, but another love.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” – John 14:6
“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” – John 14:17
“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;” – Ephesians 4:14-23
