The Heart Of Righteousness

IMG_2427“Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.” – Hosea 10:12

The Hebrew word that is translated into “righteousness” in this passage is “tsdaqah“. It literally means “rightness” or “justice“, or “that which is right and just“. Since God had given the Jewish people His law, it was understood that this should be the standard by which we determine what is right and just. Therefore, to be righteous, one must obey God’s laws and commandments. This is why Jesus tells us in Matthew 22:37-38, that to Love God with all our hearts, and to love others more then ourselves is what all the other laws and words of correction from the prophets hang on. You see, if we Love God with all our hearts, and love others more then ourselves, then we will by default full fill all other laws and commandments that we are required to uphold, because when we put God first and others before ourselves we will always do what it right and just.

Seems simple right? Well, there was a problem. The heart of fallen man is selfish wanting it’s own pleasure, deceitful, lying to itself and to others to get what it wants, and desperately wicked caring not for what is right (Jeremiah 17:19). So in our fallen state it is not possible to fulfill the law and commandments because our heart’s just not in it. We need a new heart, a heart that understands selflessness and love. We need the heart of God.

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” – Ezekiel 36:26-27

Once we have received Jesus Christ into our hearts, He makes us a new creature in Him and for the first time ever we can finally understand true love. Why? Because until that moment we have never truly experienced true love, because God “is” love (1 John 4:8). There are many counterfeits in the world but only God is true love and we are never truly satisfied until we find it.

Once we have true love living in our new hearts, then and only then are we able to Love God with all our hearts, and love others more then ourselves, and at this point fulfilling the law not only becomes easy, it becomes natural. When we truly love someone, we want to put them first, and when we put them first we will (by default) do what is right and just by them.

So break up the fallow ground of your stony heart and seek The Lord today! He will till your heart and make it new, and plant seeds of righteousness in you, that your life may bare good fruit.

“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” – Matthew 7:20

“Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.” – Hosea 10:12
