“But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.” – Hebrews 2:6-8
The old world writing style was very poetic and therefor, at times very confusing. When we dissect this passage in the context of the chapter containing it, we see that it speaks to the dilemma of understanding mans place and level of authority in creation. In essence, the writer of Hebrews is pointing out the fact that, though man has been promised to have authority over all things, we see that inherently and naturally, he does not. So that leaves us to question, if God has promised us this authority and if God can not lie, yet we do not have the authority by default, then there must be a way to obtain it. If so, then how?
The first clues needed to answer this can again be found in our opening passage. Though man was given dominion and authority over the natural world from creation, it also states that we were made a little lower then the angels. This means that our natural authority is limited to the physical and not the spiritual, being lower then the angelic who we have no authority over by birthright. This is a problem. Why? Because as humans our greatest foe and enemy, the accuser of man, the great deceiver, that old devil, Lucifer and his cohorts, are fallen angels (Isaiah 14:12). Therefore, by the order of creation, natural man is lower then, and has no authority over, these evil beings, their rule or their power. This is why scripture tells us that Satan is the prince and ruler of this world, because in our natural state, his authority is greater than ours.
“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:” – Ephesians 2:2
It is critical to understand the order of creation to grasp spiritual authority. It’s like understanding the ranks of officers in the military. This is why the centurion in Matthew chapter 8 had such faith in Jesus’s authority, to the point of causing Jesus to “marvel”. Being a military man of “rank”, he was able to understand the authority that rank grants, and having an understanding of it, he was then able to put his faith in it.
So now as we begin to see that we are not naturally created with authority over the demonic and spiritual powers that govern this world, being created lower then the angels, we are humbled enough to recognize that we need a greater power then anything we could ever hope to possess in and of ourselves. We need help, we need a Savior. Someone higher then the angels (which includes the fallen ones).
“(Jesus) Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.” – Hebrews 1:3-8
Here we see that, though we were created lower then the angels in authority, Jesus was created higher. This is where the beauty of God’s plan spoken over satan since the garden of Eden starts to shine through as the pieces fall into place and start to make a lot of since. You see, we are born lower then the fallen demonic angelic principalities and powers of this world, but Jesus, being higher, came to make us his brothers and sisters in Christ, the Children of God. Jesus died, in part, to change our rank and level of authority through adoption. If we are willing to be covered by the blood of Jesus (salvation by adoption), he will make us a new creature, with a new rank, and new authorities! By becoming join-heirs with Christ we inherit, His level of authority. Then and only then are all things finally and truly subject unto is in the Name of Jesus. We are reborn into an new creature that has a higher place in the order of creation then the old creature did. We are now part of the family of God, sons and daughters of the Most High King.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” – Romans 8:11-17
We have been granted this wonderful gift of authority for the purpose of being the body of Christ in this physical world. We are meant to use it to do God’s work, being a representative and reflection of Him. Not just in authority and power but also in example, in righteousness, purity, and love. Though this authority is granted us by the sacrificial blood of Jesus, keeping it is not without condition. To walk in it we must take note of Paul’s words to the Romans when stating:
“For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” – Romans 8:13-14
Reading this we understand that to walk in the power of God, we must be the sons of God, and to be the sons of God, we must obey the Spirit of God, living holy lives by His leading. We must crucify the flesh in all things, causing it to come into submission to the Spirit which works through us, the will of God with all power and authority in the Name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
“And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him. Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.” – John 12:23-31
“And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” – Luke 10:17-20
