“And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” – Luke 10:17-20
All power, authority, and might was given to Jesus (Jude 1:25), and intern we were made joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). This means that what Christ inherits we inherit and what He gets we get, including authorities. This great authority is what the disciples were so shocked to discover. Nevertheless, Jesus was quick to point out the real treasure of this joint-heirship with Him. The most valuable thing we will ever inherit is His name, and thusly, acceptance into His Father’s Kingdom.
There is no gift, office, miracle, blessing, authority, or ability that compares to our blessed salvation. The gift of eternal life is by far the greatest gift ever given, purchased for us by the very blood of Jesus. No other inheritance comes close, no title or position can surpass it, no gifting can equate to it, and no earthly gain can attain it, nor bring the joy and peace of it. To see one brought to salvation is the greatest miracle and operation of the Holy Spirit one could ever hope to witness or be part of, causing all of heaven to stand and cheer. So then, for the true Christian, their greatest joy and treasure in this life, is being given access to the riches and glory of the next.
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21
“I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth….
…there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” – Luke 15:7, 10
Jesus clearly and repeatedly stated that we are not of this world (John 15:19), therefore neither are our treasures, nor our hearts desires, or our minds focus. But rather, let our hearts, minds, energies, and actions be set humbly and selflessly on things above and not on things below. For He knows and tries the heart of men and as it is written, “He who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:4)
“I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” – Jeremiah 17:10
“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” – Colossians 3:1-4
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.” – Ephesians 2:6-7
