Sadly, we live in a world that feeds on envy and the seeking of vain glory. Nearly everyone seems to be hustling for attention and searching for spotlights in every possible way. Yet scripture says that we are not of this world (John 17:16) and that to love the things this world loves makes us an enemy of God (James 4:4) and that includes vain glory, but why?
Why is the seeking of self attention so disgusting to God? Because it’s Satan’s sin, and just like Lucifer, if you allow it to take root in your heart it will lead to self idolatry and cost you your place in God’s kingdom and in heaven itself.
“They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.” Jonah 2:8
When we envy the attention, position, gifts, or glory of another, we not only make them into an idol, but desire and aspire to make ourselves an idol to others as well. At the root of it, again just like Lucifer, we want to be worshiped. So be sure to ask yourself in everything that you do, “am I aspiring to give praise or to receive it?”
“Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.” – 1 Corinthians 10:14-15
Rather then seeking spotlights of our own making, let us humble ourselves before God in obedience and meekness that He may shine the light of His Glory upon us. All glory is vain when it is sort for or attained of our own actions. The only true glory is that bestowed upon us unexpectedly and undeservedly by God.
Examine your heart and determine to not only forsake the pursuit of vain glory but to divert all genuine, unintended, and unsolicited glory of men away from yourself and toward God, the only one who is worthy to be praised.
