The definition of the word “Reconciliation” is to “restore one to favor“. Corinthians tells us that not only have we been restored unto favor with God but we have been called to a ministry of restoring others. Romans 1:20-32 gives us a synopsis of the degradation of mankind. It begins with the perfection of creation where all that is created has a knowledge of it’s creator, yet through time they begin to choose to become adulterous toward God, creating and serving other gods. They turned to worshiping men, animals, and angels. Though they know better they chose to worship creations rather then the creator and as they do, they fall farther and father into ignorance, arrogance, and depravity. We see, not an evolution from creation to present, where things constantly and consistently improve, but rather in reality we see a de-evolution (or devil-ution) where from creation to present you see things getting constantly and consistently worse and worse. The farther mankind moves away from the perfection of creation and it’s knowledge and recognition of the creator, the more everything decays, degrades, and breaks down. Our morals, our bodies, our over all physical health, our societies, and our world, it’s all fallen out of favor with God and is in decay. This is the true nature of the “ministry of reconciliation”, to bring all things back into the knowledge, recognition, and favor of God. Just as one might help to reconcile and adulterers bride back to her first love, helping her to see the error of her selfish decisions and her destructive ways, restoring their marriage. Or just as one might help to reconcile a rebellious run-away child back to their parents, helping them to see the love, wisdom, truth, peace, and safety they have fled from for the seductions of liars and thieves and bring these lost and deceived children home, restoring their relationship with their parents.
This is the true meaning and purpose of the ministry of reconciliation, and we are all called to it. Everyone of us that has ourselves been restored to favor with God is called to help others see (as we did) the error of their rebellious ways, and show them how to be reconciled (through Christ) back to their creator, their first love, their Heavenly Father, their true God.
“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” – 2 Corinthians 5:19-20
