“And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?” – Zechariah 3:1-2
O the power of this passage, the imagery it invokes, and the perspective it conveys. Here the prophet sees the high priest standing before an angel of The Lord. Joshua, the priest, waits for God to move on his behalf, yet there is a hindrance. Satan stands there to resist him, trying to prevent this thing which God is about to do. However Joshua doesn’t give up, he doesn’t get discouraged, he doesn’t turn away, he is not moved by the resistance. Instead, he stands in faith before his Lord and The Lord Himself rebukes Satan and proceeds to accomplish that which He desired for Joshua.
So many times in life we find ourselves in this place. Just like Joshua, God has a plan for us, something He desires to do. Yet it seems that just as He’s about to begin to bring those plans about, the devil rises up to resist us in a mad fury. Notice that Satan does not dare try to resist God directly, knowing that he cannot succeed. Instead he rises up to resist us, the Joshua’s, hoping to get us to retreat just before God moves on our behalf and we receive the promise and the victory.
Sadly this resistance is the point at which many give up and turn away, thinking the opposition to be to great for them. They forget who is on their side. They forget that as long as they are seeking and walking in obedience to God and His will, then this resistance isn’t actually coming against them, it’s coming against God. If they simply stand their ground and wait on God, The Lord will defend His own, building their faith and spiritual strength. Do not take actions into your own hands. Simply stand in obedience before you Lord and know that this is not your fight, it’s God’s, and if you give Him a chance to fight it, I promise He will not loose.
No matter how hurtful or chaotic the resistance gets, know that God is stronger and in your humble obedience, He will not forsake you. Do not turn and run! Stand and wait faithfully on God. When you stand for God, God will stand for you, and when God stands for you, I assure you that the devil will be the only one running.
