“And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The Lord will not do good, neither will he do evil.” – Zephaniah 1:12
God detest complacency. There is truly no such thing as a “stagnate Christian”. If you’re not pursuing God and laboring to move forward, you are assuredly sliding backwards. God holds those that know His truth to a higher standard knowing that there complacency is without excuse. God speaks, teaches, corrects, and instructs His own daily but we must come to Him eager to hear and do as He commands ever growing, ever learning, and ever doing His sovereign will. It’s not enough to simply believe in God, we must continually seek, love, and obey Him also.
“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” – James 2:19-20
“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” – Revelation 3:15-16
Wow, there is such power in the raw harsh reality of those words. God would rather us be cold to him then lukewarm. He would rather that we be completely lost and def to His words then to hear them and choose to do nothing about it. The word translated to “spue” in this verse, in the original Greek, is “emeo” and actually means “vomit“. In other words, a lukewarm, stagnate, complacent, fruitless believer literally makes God sick.
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” – James 1:22
Why does God think so poorly of those who believe in Him while baring no fruit? Because they are in rebellion to His will without excuse of ignorance. They hear His words, instructions, and warnings but take no action to obey them, and with their complacency, encourage others to do the same. They do not reverence His wisdom, respect His will, or fear His wrath toward disobedience. The simple truth is that God has called us all to a greater work for His kingdom. He speaks His wisdom and will to us daily. Therefore, the complacent (or lukewarm) believer is really nothing more then a rebellious and disobedient child that is ignoring the voice of their Heavenly Father instructing them to obey His will and provoking Him to wrath. Sadly, some have ignored His voice so long that He has simply stopped speaking to them all together. They are lost and don’t even know it, and that is the worse place to be.
Choose today to run hard after God with everything you’ve got. The race of faith mentioned in 2 Timothy 4:7 will not be won by those who stand still. Christianity is not a spectator sport. If you are in a church or find yourself amongst people that promote complacency in your Spiritual walk, run for your life. Your salvation and your soul hang in the balance.
“Then shall they know that I am the Lord, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed. Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not. And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.” – Ezekiel 33:29-33
