“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.” – Romans 16:17-18
Paul was not known for holding his tongue when it came to reproving and rebuking sin in the camp. From the very beginning of the origins of the church the devil was constantly trying to slip in with false teachings and doctrines bringing division to the body of Christ. His intentions were always to draw believers away from the undefiled truth of the entirety of God’s Word. Satan is ever trying to insert half truths and whole lies into people’s beliefs causing them to be pitted one against an other, knowing that a house divided against itself can not stand (Mark 3:25). These ministers of Satan (2 Corinthians 11:15) and their doctrines of demons (1 Timothy 4:1) had to be continuously addressed, exposed, and rebuked through out scripture and particularly in the early church.
In the above mentioned verses Paul strongly warned that if anyone teaches any doctrine that is contrary to the Word of God found in the scriptures, then they are working to feed their own flesh rather then your spirit and we are to flee from them. Satan is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8), so ask yourself, “how do lions hunt?” They divide and conquer, they scatter the heard so they can pick off the young, the weak, and the wounded. Satan hunts Christians the same way.
There is nothing Satan fears more, short of Christ himself, then a united body functioning together in one mind and one accord being led by one Spirit, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit of God will never contradict itself and when we are all led of the same spirit we will naturally be in one accord all doing the will of God. So if anyone is willfully contradicting the Word of God then there is a spirit at work, it’s just not the Holy One. Likewise, if there is discord, disorder, or disunity among the brethren then it’s because people are being led of more then one spirit and those spirits are conflicting with each other. Judge them by their fruits knowing that the Spirit of God will never contradict the Word of God. Choose ye this day whom ye will serve, and be steadfast in the faith with one mind and one accord. As for me, I choose to stand with those who stand with God.
