“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” – Matthew 28:18-20
Understanding spiritual authority is critical for the true Christian. We are commanded to go forth and fulfill the great commission which in Mark 16 includes the casting out of devils, healing of the sick, setting the captive free, and all manner of miraculous and powerful works that require the use of ones spiritual authority. These were some of Jesus’s last Words of instruction to His followers on earth before He ascended to heaven, pointing to their importance and relevance.
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” – Mark 16:17-18
Sadly, though Christ paid a very high price to purchase this great gift of immense authority for us over the enemy, most are simply not using it and are allowing the devil free reign in their lives and in the lives of others. Satan is a bully and a lier, he convinces many Christians today that he is stronger then he really is and that they lack the power or ability to overcome him. He is able to do this mainly for two reasons. One because he has caused so many to believe the lie that you can live in willful sin and still be saved. This is a lie straight from satan meant to steal your salvation and thus, your authority against him. The other reason is because many really don’t understand spiritual authority, they don’t know what they have or why they have it so they are bluffed an bullied into not using it. Ask yourself, are you walking in the fullness of the authority that has been granted you by the sacrificial blood of Jesus Christ? You should be, not for your glory, but for His.
“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” – Luke 10:19-20
The greatest gift the blood of Jesus grants us is eternal life, there’s no denying that, however it also grants us authority over the powers of the enemy. This authority is for the sole purpose of helping others come to the gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus and glorifying the name of God before man.
Every Christian receives it at salvation through the blood of Jesus but many do not understand how to use it. The first thing required to walk in authority is faith, you have to believe you have it in order to use it. Think of a prison guard, if they don’t really believe they have authority over the inmates they are going to get walked all over or worse. They have to know their authority and their options well.
In Matthew chapter 8 we read the story of the Centurion. This story is key in understanding your spiritual authority. The centurion, being a military man understood rank and authority and believing that Christ was the higher authority had faith in that authority. Why did it take a military man to really grasp this concept?
Think on this, the title “Lord of Host” shows up in scripture over 260 times. Let’s look at what that really means. The word that was translated into “Host” in the title in the original hebrew is “sabaoth”. Sabaoth literally means “armies”. We also see elsewhere in scripture reference to the “heavenly host” as referring to the angels. So the title “Lord of Host” actually means “Lord (or leader of) the angelic armies of heaven”. Wow, that’s powerful! Here’s an other eye opener. Remember that Satan and all his minions are actually fallen angels. That means they are part of the “host” and therefore, are subject to The “Lord of Host”.
The centurion understood rank and military authority so he understood Christ’s authority as the leader of the angelic armies of heaven. This is what Christ was marveling at. Not that the man had faith alone but that he had it by way of understanding who and what Jesus really was.
Understanding who and what Christ really is, is key for us to understand authority as well. Because once we understand who Christ is, we can start to understand what we are.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” – Romans 8:14-17
Are you starting to see it? This is why the blood of Jesus grants us authority over satan! Through the blood of Jesus we are adopted into the family of God! We become children of God and “joint heirs” with Christ! That means equal heirs! The same inheritance, the same permissions, the same authority! We are join heirs with the “Lord of Host”, let that sink in. O if the church would truly realize that, what trouble the devil would be in. This is why Jesus said:
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” – John 14:12
He knew that through His sacrifice He was going to be giving us a huge promotion and increasing His army. He has truly made us generals in the army of God. It’s time we start acting like it.
“And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” – Matthew 10:7-8
“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” – Matthew 16:19
“And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” – Ephesians 1:19-23
“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.” – 1 Peter 3:18-22
