God wants to give good gifts to His children. He is a good father that fights for His own. He is pure love, He provides, teaches, corrects and blesses. He truly delights in giving you the desires of your heart but only if you’re heart is desiring the right things.
Look at that verse again. As with most of God’s promises, we like to remember and quote the promise but not the condition that brings it about. Then when we don’t see the promise we doubt God but truthfully the fault is ours for not fulfilling the condition given as a requirement of the activation of the promise. In this verse there are three conditions.
- Delight thyself in The Lord. That is, to make Him you’re hearts desire! To seek Him with your whole heart wanting nothing else more then you want Him. If your hearts desire is for God then it will also be for the things of God, and if you desire the things of God He will surely give it to you!
- Commit thy way unto The Lord. This condition is where most people fail. It sets a stander that says even though you are required to have a hunger and love in your heart for God, His will, and His ways, that’s not enough. You have to act upon those feelings and commit to walk it out. Living fully for Him with your every action. Love and faith are not enough, you have to commit your ways. My husband loves me and delights in me with his heart but that doesn’t excuse him from having to commit to me and walk out that commitment with his actions.
- Trust in Him. Everything may not always happen when and how we want it but as long as you are fulfilling the first two conditions and you don’t quit, He will bring it about in due time. However, know that quitting can cause you to miss it, so Wait and Trust God!
Always take time to examine the promises of God for the conditions and make sure that you are doing your part so that God can do His. Remember that “He is not a man that He should lie, if He said it, He will surely do it.” (Numbers 23:19) That means that He “has” to honor His promises but it also means that He “has” to honor the conditions as well. No exceptions. Go back and re-read some of your favorite promises from God in your bible and underline the conditions.
There are many places in scripture where God promises to pour out on you the desires of your heart but the conditions are always the same. You have to not be seeking them, but rather seeking Him instead. You see, when the desire of your heart becomes the desire to fulfill the desires of His, it blesses Him and in return He blesses you.
“Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 6:30-33
