“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” – James 4:4
This verse is referring to spiritual adultery. “Cheating” on God with the world and the things of it. When we willingly and knowingly choose to satisfy our own pleasures, wants, or desires (the lust of the flesh) over God’s will and indulge in the things of the world, we are an unfaithful adulterous bride cheating on Christ and we make ourselves “THE ENEMY OF GOD“. That means that God Himself is “against” us when we are in that state and that’s a very dangerous place to be.
Lord may we never find ourselves to be counted among Your enemies and if ever we do, we pray You expose our faults to us that we may fall on our faces before You and beg Your mercy and forgiveness. Convict us as a people of our lack of convictions and cause us to run whole heartedly after You! Let us be reminded that You died for us so that we could live for You.
We are called to be the bride of Christ; spotless, holy and set apart. (Ephesians 5:27) Submitted and committed to our groom, forsaking all others, and denying self for the sake of our first love. If we truly love Him, we “will” keep His commandments. (John 14:15) Let us examine our hearts this day, put away foolish pride, and choose to serve Him to the fullest, with our whole hearts, holding nothing back. (Joshua 24:15) Let us put away the things of the world, avoiding even the very appearance of worldliness that we might walk worthy of a position at the side of the One who calls us “beloved” and of the name given to us by His sacrificial love. (Ephesians 4:1) No more crying “grace and mercy” in the face of willful disobedience. No more justifying self wants over the commandments of God or twisting scripture to sooth our convictions. No more flirting with the world while hanging on our saviors arm and pretending He doesn’t care and it doesn’t hurt Him. No more lowering standards of righteousness, no more compromise, no more excuses. He has been so faithful to us, can we not even try to be faithful to Him?
Commit this day to be the one that raises the standard that others follow, not the one who lowers it. Choose to be holy, Choose to be set apart, choose to be real, choose to be the difference that everyone else is looking for.
